Error description

  • cannot open Inventor drawing locked by CAD
    Reproduce (SmDemo V5R18 SP6 - Inventor
    Professional 2008):
    1) create new part, smarteam save it (Part1.ipt)
    2) Inventor-Smarteam-lifecycle-checkin Part1
    (Part1 is automatically closed)
    3) create new drawing, smarteam save it
    (Drawing1.idw)
    4) Inventor-Smarteam-lifecycle-checkin Drawing1
    (Drawing1 is automatically closed)
    5) create new assembly, place component Part1,
    smarteam save it (Assembly1.iam)
    6) while leaving this assembly open, open Part1
    7) Inventor-Smarteam-lifecycle-release Part1 - the
part remained opened and in work directory for
while Release Keep local file was signed
    automatically
    8) Open drawing1 using ST Open Dialog
=> ERROR "Part1 is locked by CAD"
Error because Part1, even though it is released,
still seems to be changed and is therefore "locked
    by CAD"??
In some occasions (which occur quite often at
customer's site) it is not possible to open an
Inventor drawing, unless all other documents
(where parts of the drawing appear) are closed.
    This is really a problem.
Everything needs to be closed in order to open a
    simple drawing.

Problem conclusion

  • THIS PROBLEM IS PERMANENT RESTRICTION IN
    SMARTEAM
The described behavior is correct, even though it is
    forced by some Inventor limitations.
During this scenario we have one revision
(released) of the part opened in the CAD, and at
the same time lifecycle operation is about to bring
another revision of the same part from the vault.
When it happens, Inventor usually crashes, and it
is unrelated to the ST Integration.
Our solution for these crashes was to prevent
lifecycle overwriting the document while it is
opened in the CAD, thus the error
message about some file is locked appears.
In order to successfully perform the copy-out
operation the user MUST close all the documents
    that reference the problematic part.
The problem of Inventor crashes related to opening
same file names, but different revisions, was
solved firstly in V5R19 SP3 and referenced in
Dassault Systemes Q&A Article ID QA00000002453.
