Publishing PPT or PPTX files results in 'Unspecified error'

Troubleshooting


Problem

When publishing a PowerPoint ppt or pptx file fails, and the BusinessServiceRender.log shows that the render service failed with an 'Unspecified error', this might be due to two different causes: (a) The ppt or pptx file is corrupt, or a pptx file was renamed to ppt; (b) The Microsoft Office Tools and/or Microsoft Office Shared Features are not installed.

Symptom

Publishing pptx or ppt files is unsuccessful, and the BusinessServiceRender.log on the Rendition Engine server shows the following error:
