  Scenario.
  1. Start CATIA V5R16SP4.
  2. Select File / New and create a new CATPart file.
  3. Click on Apply Material icon and apply
  Aluminium in the Metal tab to PartBody.
  (for reference) Aluminium Properties / Rendering in
  R16SP4
  4. Select File / Save As and save the CATPart file
  in which the material is applied.
  5. Close CATIA V5R16SP4.
  6. Start CATIA V5R17SP6.
  7. Select File/Open and open the CATPart file which
  is saved at Step-4.
  8. Change to Material Library workbench.
  9. Select New Material/Properties and define
  Rendering tab as the same
  settings of Aluminium at CATIA V5R16SP4.
  10. Select File / Save As and save the material as
  an appropriate file name.
  11. Close CATIA V5R17SP6.
  12. Start CATIA V5R17SP6 again.
  13. Select File/Open and open the material file
  which is saved at Step-10.
  14. Select New Material/Properties. Note that
  Material Preview is different from the original
  Rendering style.
  15. Click OK in Properties dialog at Step-14.

Problem conclusion

• THIS PROBLEM WILL BE FIXED ON CATIA VERSION
  5 RELEASE 19 GA level.
  NOTE THAT THIS PROBLEM WILL ALSO BE FIXED
  ON V5R18SP02.

  Correction Explanation
  Between R16 and R17 level, the default
  environment image file delivered with Catia has
  been modified. This image has been changed to
  improved the visualization of reflective parts.
  It is for that reason that the Aluminium material (or
  all other reflective materials) does not have the
  same visualization aspect between R16 and
  R17/R18.
  .
  Nevertheless, the defect corrected to avoid the
  wrong material preview visualization when you
  create a new material after loading an old R16
  model.
  .
  Answer and By-Pass
  To retrieve exactly the same visualization as in
  R16, user can use the old environment image
  file to override the default one.
  This can be done by modifying the Material
  settings: in Tools/Options/Infrastructure/Material
  Library item , change the field "environment image
  file" and set the value
  to .....\resources\graphic\figures\DefaultEnvironme
  nt_Old.jpg" (directory of your Catia installation
  where all environment images samples are
  located).
