Error description

  • Occurs on Compaq MSL 5026DLX, and possibly on other
    newer hardware.
           Brings up Media Label Wizard
              selects
                 robot and drive, overwrite existing, format is
                 already checked and greyed out, barcode reader,
                 keep vols in lib, prompt to insert vols
              clicks "label now"
              puts tape in entry/exit slot when prompted
              receives messages
                 "initializing lib device..."
                 "attempting to label vol..."
              then receives message
                 "unable to label vol xxx in dev mtx.y.z.w reason:
                 the parameter is incorrect"

Local fix

  • Workaround is to label tapes using commandline:
          label libvolume lbx.y.z.w search=yes  labelsource=barcode
          checkin=scratch  volrange=bar11a,bar99a

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The labeling wizard fails with "the *
    *                      parameter is incorrect"                 *
    * when labeling tapes with SDLT, SDLT2, *
    *                      DLT1, VXA-2 or 9940 drives.             *
    * This is because the wizard does not *
    * recognize the new medium types *
    *                      for these drives.                       *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    The labeling wizard will have to recognize the new medium
    types and formats for SDLT, SDLT2, DLT1, VXA-2 or
    STK 9940 drives.

Problem conclusion

  • With this fix, the wizard will recognize the new medium types
    and set the correct format for the drives when labeling tapes.
