Question

How do you administer licenses with IBM Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody?

Cause

This document provides information on using single user and server licenses as well as license borrowing, dongles, and redundant server configuration.

Answer

There are two main options for using licenses with IBM Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody
User/ Standalone/Auth user license:
  1. Download an AUTH USER license from IBM Support Licensing
     
  2. Create an environment variable called TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE and point it to the location of the license file.CreateEnvVariable1CreateEnvVariable2

Floating licenses/ Deployed over license server:
 
  1. Download IBM Rational License Key Server V8.1.6 (RLKS) from IBM Fix Central.
  2. Optionally, download available updates for RLKS 8.1.6 from IBM Fix Central.
  3. Download a FLOATING license from IBM Support Licensing
  4. Install the RLKS
  5. Use either the License Key Manager or the older License Tools application to manage your licenses. See following for specific set-up instructions.  For additional information please refer to the Rhapsody documentation Managing licenses

  • IBM License Key Manager (recommended):
    1. Launch the License Key Administrator from the Windows menu (start) > IBM Rational > License Key Administrator
    2. Select Import a Rational License File in the wizard
    3. Browse to the server license you downloaded and select Import
    4. Agree to this restart the license server
    5. Note that you should be presented with a confirmation message and a list of the individual license features available.
    6. Create on the client machine an environment variable TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE and set it to 27000@<server>, where <server> is the IP address or hostname of the license server


    Older License Tools application (LMTools):
    1. Open your server license file and remove any VENDOR rational or VENDOR telelogic lines
      Note: You should have a single VENDOR ibmratl line remaining
    2. Launch LMTools from the Windows menu (Start) > IBM Rational > License Tools
    3. Use the Browse button in the Config Services tab to find the Path to the license file by selecting the adjacent button
    4. Press the Re-Read License File button in the Start/Stop/Reread tab
    5. Press the Start Server button.
    6. Check the log in the Config Services tab to check the server status or troubleshoot any errors
    7. On the client machine, create an environment variable TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE and set it to <port>@<server>, where <port> is 27000 by default and  <server> is the IP address or hostname of the license server. If you have modified your license file on the server to use a different port (e.g. 27001) you must specify that port number instead of the default value.
