FileNet Content Engine - Unknown StorageArea error, unable to delete document

Troubleshooting


Problem

An administrator deleted both the storage area in FEM and it's associated physical staging area. Afterwards, they found a single document who's content was stored in the storage area. Attempts to delete the document fail because the Storage Area is unknown. How can the document be deleted so that they can precede with deleting its Document class?

Symptom

Unknown StorageArea error, when deleting document in FileNet Enterprise Manager (FEM).
Search of Storage Areas in FEM using storage area ID specified in the error message fails to find any matching storage area.

Cause

Storage Area was deleted prior to moving or deleting the content it contained therefore the document's record in the DocVersion table referenced an invalid Storage Area ID in the STORAGE_AREA_ID field.

Environment

FileNet Content Engine 5.1, AIX, Oracle Database

Diagnosing The Problem

Check to see if the STORAGE_AREA_ID value for the document is valid.

Resolving The Problem

Steps to work-around the issue:

  1. Create new storage area.
  2. Use SQL to set the STORAGE_AREA_ID value to the object ID of new storage area for the document in question.
  3. Delete the document and then delete the storage area.
