APAR status

  • Closed as Permanent restriction.

Error description

  • Scenario :
    1. Open the specific .CATPart file in Catia.
    2. Switch to the Digitized Shape Editor workbench.
    3. Click on the Mesh offset icon.
    4. Select the geometrical set.
    5. Set the offset value as 10mm and click on apply then OK.
    6. Observe that the Mesh Offset.1 object is created in the
    tree.
    7. Observe the offset.
    Problem:
The mesh has been offset to both sides.
    Expected Result:
The mesh should be offset to only one side, i.e the side
    indicated by arrow in CATIA.

Problem conclusion

  • THIS PROBLEM IS PERMANENT RESTRICTION IN CATIA.
    Additional Closure Information:
    INCIDENT DIAGNOSIS:
A part of the mesh is created in the opposite direction.
    TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION:
The given mesh has a very poor quality (duplicated triangles)
    implying inverted normals while having
a consistent topology. Even after duplicated triangles
deletion, a lot of problems remain. These cannot be fixed
    easily.
    BY-PASS:
Remesh the part. The results are almost good. There are still
2 non-manifold vertices and 1 non-manifold edge. Use the MESH
CLEANER command to delete them. Use FILL HOLES command to
fill up the resulting hole. The offset operations will then
    succeed.
    To remesh :
    1. Export the initial mesh as a cloud of points (format .cgo).
    2. Filter it with radius of 0.1mm.
    3. Import the resulting file.
