Question

What versions of IBM Informix Tools (4GL, ISQL, CSDK, etc.) can I install in the same directory as IBM Informix Database Server?

Cause

A common question amongst our customers is what version of IBM Informix Tools can be safely installed in the same directory as the IBM Informix Database Server.

Answer

The IBM Informix suite of tools include 7 different products:
  • IBM Informix 4GL Compiler
  • IBM Informix 4GL Compiler Runtime
  • IBM Informix 4GL Rapid Development System (RDS)
  • IBM Informix 4GL Rapid Development System Runtime
  • IBM Informix SQL
  • IBM Informix SQL Runtime
  • IBM Informix Interactive Debugger
 

All of the products above are built using IBM Informix Client SDK. IBM Informix Database Server comes bundled with IBM Informix Client SDK and is installed by default unless one deselects it during a custom installation. Many of the issues encountered by customers involve installing one of the tools products built with a specific version of IBM Informix Client SDK in the same directory as a version of IBM Informix Database Server that is bundled with a different version of IBM Informix Client SDK.

The following table details which versions of IBM Informix Client SDK were used to build the various versions of IBM Informix Tools and the corresponding database version that is bundled with that specific version of IBM Informix Client SDK. These product mixes are compatible when installed in the same directory.

Starting with version 7.51.xC1 of IBM Informix Tools, efforts were made to attempt to eliminate the dependency upon certain versions of IBM Informix Client SDK when installed in the same directory as IBM Informix Database Server. One should always consult the MACHINENOTES file in $INFORMIXDIR/release/en_us/0333 to ensure the proper version of IBM Informix Client SDK is utilized.
