5655-X11 and 5655-X12: Differences between Sterling Connect:Direct for z/OS Program Numbers.

Question

What is the difference between IBM Sterling Connect:Direct for z/OS (CDZ) Program Numbers 5655-X11 and 5655-X12?
If I inadvertently installed 5655-X11 instead of 5655-X12, can I uninstall 5655-X11 without a complete reinstall of CDZ?
 

Answer

IBM Sterling Connect:Direct for z/OS Program Number 5655-X12 uses Sub-Capacity Based licensing like most IBM z/OS products.
IBM Sterling Connect:Direct for z/OS Standard Edition Program Number 5655-X11 uses Session-based licensing, that is, it is licensed based on restricted concurrent sessions. The code registers itself with a z/OS system facility for reporting purposes. Based on your license, you must set MAXPROCESS in your initparms in order to abide by the terms of your license. The software will not enforce that limit as the Legacy Sterling APKEY code used to do.
All CDZ installations start with 5655-X12 installation first. If you are licensed for 5655-X11, that is installed on top of 5655-X12.
Installation procedure:
  • For the X12 editions, you simply install a single FMID.
  • Installation for X11 involves installing the FMID for X12, and then installing a second FMID which converts X12 to X11. This process is irreversible, so once you have installed X11, you cannot revert to X12, even if your license agreement changes.
  • If you unintentionally installed X11 over the top of X12, you will need to reinstall X12 from scratch.

How to determine which edition you have installed:
  • Find the SITA036I message in the DTF started task joblog. 
  • This will show whether you have X11 or X12 installed.
Sample messages:
X11 Standard Edition (restricted license): SITA036I Connect:Direct 6.0x.00 5655-X11 Initialization Complete.
X12 Sub-Capacity Based license (no session restrictions): SITA036I Connect:Direct 6.0x.00 5655-X12 Initialization Complete.
Note - if you are on an unsupported pre-6.0 release of Connect:Direct, you will see X01 and X09 instead. X01 is equivalent to X12, while X09 is equivalent to X11.
