Error description

  • When an error occurs during a VSS deletion operation (VSS Error,
CIMOM Error, Storage Device Error), the Tivoli Storage FlashCopy
Manager VSS Requestor will remove the snapshot reference from
its own local DB, log the error, and continue.
However, the snapshot which was associated with the process that
received the error is not deleted from the storage device as
would be expected in an error situation. When this occurs, the
snapshot on the storage device remains, but the Flashcopy
Manager VSS Requestor is not aware nor is managing that
snapshot. In situations where storage volumes are tightly
controlled, the storage device may run out of target volumes
because this snapshot is never deleted from storage which would
allow the volume to be returned to the free pool.
Versions affected: Flashcopy Manager Windows 3.1, 3.2, 4.1
    Initial Impact: Medium
Additional Keywords: TSM TDP DP FCM SQL Exchange MMC

Local fix

  • Manually delete the flashcopy relationship(s) for the source
volume that are no longer in use and return the target volume(s)
to the free pool for future use.

Comments

  • We will provide a fix however the necessary changes are beyond
the scope of what can be fixed in an APAR release. Therefore if
there is a Flashcopy Manager windows release beyond 4.1, this
problem will be fixed in that newer release.
