IC76853: FLASHCOPY MANAGER 2.2 MIGHT RECONCILE MOUNTED BACKUPS ON XIV STORAGE

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Under the following circumstances mounted backups that reside
  on XIV storage will be deleted by the reconciliation which
  runs every RECONCILE_INTERVAL hours (default 12 hours):
  - the grace period of the backup has been exceeded
    (default 24 hours)
  - the backup has the state MOUNTED or MOUNTING as shown
    in the inquire_detail output
  - the profile used for the backup contains the setting
    USE_WRITABLE_SNAPSHOTS NO or AUTO in the profile
    If set to AUTO the backup is only deleted in case of
    non-LVM-mirrored  environments
  
  If all of those conditions are met the snapshot backup is
  deleted, but the mounted backup remains valid and
  read/writable until the next unmount. After the unmount the
  backup is neither restorable nor mountable. A clone will also
  remain operable.
  
  In case of using the setting USE_WRITABLE_SNAPSHOTS YES the
  message:
  
  MON <timestamp> FMM6981E Received an error from the adapter:
  Error during doRemove, XIV Status code is: "SNAPSHOT_IS_MAPPED"
  
  is contained in the summary log file but the backup/clone is
  not deleted.
  

Local fix

• Increase the grace period (profile parameter GRACE_PERIOD) to
  an amount of time where the backup has already been moved to
  tape or is not needed anymore and can be expired anyway.

  Mounted backups that reside on XIV storage might be deleted
  by the reconciliation process.
  

Problem conclusion

• IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager is corrected to not
  reconcile backups that are mounted.
  

Temporary fix

• An interim fix is currently targeted for version 2.2.1.2.
  Note that until the interim fix is actually available, this
  information is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
