IC70596: GHOST FOLDERS FILLING UP /VAR/MQM FILESYSTEM DUE TO DURABLE SUBSCRIPTIONS NOT BEING CLEANED UP.

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Durable subscriptions are created by MQFTE GUI for each user who
connects and who may or may not necessarily reconnect, leaving
permanent messages accruing on SYSTEM.MANAGED.DURABLE queues,
and using large amounts of disk space.

Local fix

  • Reconnect the GUI at regular intervals to consume the messages
    or
Manually cleanup of the affected queue(s)

Problem summary

  • The WMQFTE plugins for MQ explorer create a durable subscription
to the SYSTEM.FTE topic so that it can display a log of
transfers for that particular coordination queue manager. If the
GUI is disconnected from the coordination queue manager and not
started again then WMQ will create ghost folders to hold any
messages pertinent to the durable subscription until the
subscription is connected again. If there is a large amount of
file traffic being transferred then this can lead to these
ghost folders filling up the local file system.

    USERS AFFECTED:
All using the GUI infrequently to monitor a high-volume WMQFTE
    network.

    PLATFORMS AFFECTED:
    All supported

Problem conclusion

  • An option has been added to the WMQFTE plugin to MQ Explorer to
allow users to choose whether the subscription made to the
coordination queue manager is durable or non-durable. The
    default is durable.
If a non-durable subscription is chosen then only transfers that
occur when the WMQFTE plugins for MQ Explorer are connected to
the coordination queue manager are shown. This means that some
other method of storing transfer results must be used if results
for all transfers want to be used. The database logger feature
of WMQFTE can be used for this.
