How to configure ClearCase on Oracle Solaris 11

Question & Answer

Question

How do you configure a Solaris 11 system in order to install and run IBM Rational ClearCase?

Cause

ClearCase requires some system software packages which may not be installed by default on an Oracle Solaris 11 system. These packages must be installed before you can install and configure ClearCase.

Answer

Oracle Solaris 11 introduces the new Image Packaging System (IPS) for system software installation and management. All of the Oracle Solaris 11 software is organized as IPS packages, which are stored in repositories. The Package Manager graphical user interface or the pkg command-line interface can be used to manage packages on the system.

IBM Rational ClearCase is installed using the IBM Installation Manager and there have been no changes in the ClearCase packaging format specifically for Solaris 11. However, a small number of system software packages required by ClearCase may not be installed by default on a Solaris 11 system. It is important to review the requirements documented here and to install the following packages on your Solaris 11 system prior to installing and starting ClearCase.

pkg:/library/motif

pkg:/x11/library/libxp
Note: As of ClearCase version 9.0.1.1 and version 9.0.0.5, the libxp package does not need to be installed.

pkg:/x11/library/libxevie

pkg:/x11/library/libxscrnsaver

System administrators can use the command /usr/bin/pkg install pkg:<package name> to install the required packages.
