Preventive Service Planning
Abstract
Upgrading your DB2® pureScale® environment to Version 10.1 might require upgrading your environment components. These components are DB2 servers, data clients, database applications, and routines. Upgrading these components requires an understanding of the DB2 database product upgrade concepts, the DB2 pureScale feature, and the DB2 database products.
This roadmap will help you navigate through the available information and resources related to upgrading a DB2 pureScale environment from DB2 Version 9.8 to DB2 Version 10.1.
Content
Your first point of reference for learning how to upgrade each component of your DB2 pureScale environment and how to create an upgrade plan is the Upgrading to DB2 Version 10.1 guide. The content of this guide is available in the DB2 Information Center. The highest level topic is Upgrading to DB2 Version 10.1.
Table of Contents
Prerequisites
To convert existing Version 10.1 instances, see Convert instances to the DB2 pureScale Feature.
Ensure that you meet the installation requirements for the DB2 pureScale Feature in Version 10.1 as described in Installation requirements for DB2 database products. For details on how to use the db2prereqcheck command to verify the installation requirements, see Checking installation prerequisites with db2prereqcheck.- Review changes in Version 10.1 from existing functionality in previous releases that can affect your DB2 environment upgrade:
- Upgrade essentials for DB2 servers
- Upgrade essentials for data clients
- Upgrade essentials for database applications
- Upgrade essentials for routines
- Changes in existing functionality
- Version 9.7: Discontinue the use of functionality that is unsupported in DB2 Version 10.1.
- Discontinued or deprecated functionality that affects DB2 server upgrades
- Discontinued functionality summary
There is no utility to fall back to a previous release after upgrading your DB2 servers. Refer to the Planning section for details.
Planning
- Determine all of the upgrade process details for each component in your environment that you need to know to write your upgrade plan.
- Planning your DB2 servers upgrade
- Planning your DB2 clients upgrade
- Planning database applications and routines upgrade
- For each component, you must include in your upgrade plan:
- Upgrade prerequisites
- Pre-upgrade tasks
- Upgrade tasks
- Post-upgrade tasks
Review APARs and known issues related to upgrading to DB2 Version 10.1 in the Troubleshooting section. If these issues impact your DB2 environment upgrade, add the actions on how to resolve these issues to your upgrade plans.
To fall back to a previous release after upgrading your DB2 servers, add details to your upgrade plan about the tasks required to reverse a DB2 server upgrade. These details should include any steps required in the upgrade task that enables you to reverse an upgrade.- Plan on how to discontinue the use of deprecated functionality.
- Discontinued or deprecated functionality that affects DB2 server upgrades
- Deprecated functionality summary
- Consider upgrading your DB2 servers, clients, database applications, and routines in a test environment to learn how to address any issues that might arise during the upgrade process and to evaluate the impact of changes introduced in DB2 Version 10.1. Also in a test environment, you can determine the length of time and the disk space requirements needed to upgrade your database to DB2 Version 10.1, which are essential in developing an upgrade plan and performing a successful DB2 environment upgrade.

- Upgrading clients in a test environment
Adopting new DB2 Version 10.1 functionality
- Review support for features and capabilities from previous releases that has been added for DB2 pureScale environments:
- AIX servers on RoCE networks
- Table partitioning
- DB2 workload manager
- Review new features and capabilities in Version 10.1 that you can adopt to enhance your upgraded databases and improve performance. Here are some of the new features and capabilities available in Version 10.1 DB2 pureScale environments:
- New monitoring routines for group buffer pool usage
- Adaptive compression
- Multi-temperature data storage
- Time travel query
- Continuous data ingest
- Row and column access control
- DB2 WLM dispatcher
- XML queries performance improvements
Upgrading
- Follow the upgrade plan for your environment. The DB2 upgrade process for each component of your environment is described on the following topics:
- DB2 servers upgrade in pureScale environments
- Clients upgrade
- Database applications and routines upgrade
- The upgrade process for each component includes:
- Upgrade prerequisites
- Pre-upgrade tasks
- Upgrade tasks
- Post-upgrade tasks
