Parse input as XML failed: illegal character 0x1f error received when sending a SOAP request to a multi-protocol gateway service

Problem

Attempts to send a SOAP request message to a multi-protocol gateway service with a HTTP or HTTPS front side handler results in a parse error when using IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliances.

Symptom

When this problem occurs, the following is an example of the errors found in the DataPower logs where xxx.xx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the DataPower appliance:
