Troubleshooting
Problem
Summary reports are taking an increasing amount of time to complete.
Environment
This resolution applies to systems running IBM Mantra system software prior to release 7.3. For systems running Release 7.3 and later, refer to the related document below.
Resolving The Problem
Summary reports are based on cached data and incorporate all captured access events, both matched and unmatched. They work during the Discovery phase of data collection, and should be used primarily to help define traffic filters. To ensure a reasonable generation time for reports, the IBM Mantra appliance should not exceed a million events collected a day and 30 million events stored overall.
Regardless of how often the reports are run, once the system has reached 30 million events, the overall performance of the Summary Reports will degrade. Instead of Summary Reports, IBM recommends using a specific report under the Create Reports menu for audited data. These reports provide the same data as that found in the Summary Reports, but are more efficient and can be mailed to individual users.
If your environment requires continued use of Summary Reports, performance is best when:
- events are archived and the system scrubbed
- reports are run frequently.
Consider the following table:
1. When generating a Today, This-Week, This-Month, or This-Quarter report, IBM Mantra generates summaries only for the tabs actually enabled on the Console. (If multiple workstations connect to the appliance, the last tab-setter wins.)
2. The three summaries enabled by default are based on cached data. For these summaries, performance (report execution time) improves when the reports are run frequently enough to keep cached data comparatively up to date.
3. You cannot control the tab set included in a summary report except through the Config button on the View Summaries screen.
4. “Don’t run” means disable the tab with the Config button.
Use the tzsummary automatic enable CLI command to enable automatic generation for the Today report (every hour) and This Week report (every six hours). Turn on automatic generation from the CLI as follows:
Host (config) # tzsummary automatic enable
Host (config) #
You can add the task to scheduled command jobs using the tzsummary generate this-week and tzsummary generate this-month commands. To review the report run times and next run times, use the show tzsummary all command from the CLI:
Host (config) # show tzsummary all
