Error description

  • Product: Tivoli Network Manager
    Version: 3.8
    Component: poller

    Symptom:
    Enable SNMP polling and apply an interface filter. The
    interface filter prevents the poller from simply walking the
    interface index and ensures that it has to construct the
    interface index as part of the poll.

    Select all the hosts that comprise the entire scope of the poll
    policy. Then toggle the managed status of the devices, i.e.
    unmanage them all, and then remanage them all.

    This is a similar problem to APAR IV28101 in that the cause is
    down to the way an initial target is added when a poll policy
    has not been started and they way the first target is added
    again after all devices are re-managed.

Local fix

  • Avoid selecting all the hosts within a poll policy and altering
    their managed state at one time. Manage and unmanage hosts in
    smaller groups.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * Un-managing and re-managing all in-scope devices under a     *
    * SNMP Link state or SNMP threshold policy, which use *
    * interface filtering, may trigger the raising of alerts *
    * reporting NOSUCHNAME found for the monitored interfaces. In *
    * the default product the symptoms are intermittent and may *
    * not occur on every occasion or may only occur for a small *
    * subset of interfaces.                                        *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * Suggest to upgrade to product version 3.8.0-ITNMIP-FP0007 *
    * and/or 3.9.0-ITNMIP-FP0004                                   *
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • The software has been updated such that SNMP Link state and
    Threshold poll policies configure the poller data structures
    with the appropriate data required to build the OIDs prior to
    starting the polling mechanism.
