Question & Answer
Question
TRANSLOG_Recreate_Logctrl=1 in the notes.ini file will cause specific behavior when activating databases using the Advanced Restore Procedures with the Data Protection for Domino.
Answer
During the "Recovery from Loss of Domino Transaction Log" procedure in the Appendix of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail, Data Protect for Lotus Domino manual, the following steps should be taken (as noted in the manual - Unix or Windows):
3. Using Data Protection for Domino, restore the transaction log file to be used in the log recovery procedure. This should be the last transaction log file archived prior to the loss of the active transaction log.
4. Close the Data Protection for Domino GUI (if in use).
5. Delete the contents of the Domino transaction log directory except for the log file restored in Step 3.
6. Modify the notes.ini file for the Domino server with these settings:
TRANSLOG_Recreate_Logctrl=1
TRANSLOG_Status=1
7. Restore (but do not activate) the databases you want to recover to the latest state within the archived log extents using Data Protection for Domino.
8. Use Data Protection for Domino to activate the databases you are recovering and apply transaction logs. (The TRANSLOG_Recreate_Logctrl parameter in the notes.ini file will be automatically reset to 0).
Before activating the databases restored in step 7, the translog directory should only contain the one log file restored in step 3. When the 'domdsmc activatedbs' command is run in step 8, the following message will be reported by Domino (for example):
... Please wait, creating new transaction logs in directory: f:\translog\
Since TRANSLOG_Recreate_Logctrl=1 is specified in the notes.ini file at this time, the control file (nlogctrl.lfh) and one additional txn log should be created that continues the number sequence from the log restored in step 3.
For example:
Before step 8, the contents of the translog directory are:
S0000042.txn
After step 8, the contents of the translog directory are:
nlogctrl.lfh
S0000042.txn
S0000043.txn
If the directory is cleared, and a new complete set of txn logs starting at S0000000.txn are created, then TRANSLOG_Recreate_Logctrl=1 was not correctly picked up by Domino. Ensure that multiple entries do not exist for this option in the notes.ini file, and that the correct notes.ini file is being edited.
