IV19092: UNIX OS AGENT CAN GENERATE HIGH CPU USAGE WHEN ARE ACTIVE MANY SITUATIONS AGAINST PROCESSES

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When are active many (about 100) situations monitoring the
processes attribute group, the agent can generate high CPU
usage. The introduction of a configurable delay after the
request to the OS helps to avoid the peaks of the CPU.

Problem summary

  • The UNIX OS Agent may cause high CPU usage when many situations
    are active simultaneously against processes.

When there are many active situations (typically greater than
    100) monitoring simultaneously the Process attribute group, the
UNIX OS Agent may generate high CPU usage. The introduction of a
configurable delay after the request to the OS helps to avoid
the peaks of the CPU even if this lengthens the time of the data
    collection.

For this APAR fix to be effective, a new environment variable
has been added. See the Install Actions section of the APAR
    conclusion for more details.

Problem conclusion

  • The behavior of the UNIX OS Agent was modified to allow the CPU
to sleep an amount of time, configurable with the new
    environment variable KUX_PROCESSES_DELAY.

    Install Actions:

Set KUX_PROCESSES_DELAY to a value in milliseconds for the CPU
to sleep in the ux.ini file, and restart the agent. The range of
this variable is 0 to 999 milliseconds, where 0 means the normal
behavior of the agent without sleep.

The fix for this APAR is included in the following maintenance
    vehicle:
