Error description

  • The following error are seen in the JRE client trace file when
graphical views such as the Workflow Editor or Topology views
are accessed. Default workspaces with graphs display as expected

[Problem recreated on IE 11(32-bit client) on Windows 7 with
Oracle v8 u101 (32-bit) installed as the browser JRE version]

Local fix

  • Use Java Webstart application instead of the browser based
application or revert the JRE level to 99 or lower

Problem summary

  • When using a version of the Java runtime with the Tivoli
Enterprise Portal where the Java maintenance update level is >
99, the Policy Workflow Editor, Graphic Views, and Situation
Formula displays will no longer function properly.

More recent Java runtime releases from Oracle have maintenance
levels that are greater than 99. An example would be Java 8u111
(release 1.8.0_111). One of the components packaged with the
Tivoli Enterprise Portal requires that the maintenance level be
< 100 in order to function properly. This component is
responsible for the rendering of many graphical views in the
Portal, including the Policy Workflow Editor, Graphic Views in
workspaces, and Situation Formula display. If the Java runtime
maintenance level is > 99, then access to these features in the
Portal will fail, and the Portal client can become unstable.

Problem conclusion

  • A fix has been included with the Tivoli Enterprise Portal to
automatically adjust the reported maintenance level of the Java
runtime if that level is discovered to be > 99.

The fix for this APAR is contained in the following maintenance
    packages:

       | fix pack | 6.3.0-TIV-ITM-FP0007

Temporary fix

  • There are 3 deployments modes associated with the Tivoli
Enterprise Portal: Desktop, Java Web Start, and Web Browser.
There is no temporary workaround or circumvention available for
the Web Browser deployment mode. Application of this APAR is
required to address this problem if the Portal is launched via a
Web Browser. For the Desktop client, please contact IBM
Support. A PMR will be opened and assistance will be provided
    by IBM.

For a Java Web Start deployment, the following workaround can be
    used:

    1) On the machine where the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server is
    installed, edit the following file:

    Windows: <itm_install_dir>\Config\tep.jnlpt
    Linux/Unix: <itm_install_dir>/<arch>/config/tep.jnlpt

    2) Locate the following statement in the tep.jnlpt file:
    <!-- Custom parameters -->

    3) Just after the statement above, add the following line:
    <property name="jnlp.java.version" value="1.x.0_99"/>

Replace the character 'x' in the value string above with the
Java release level. For example, if using Oracle Java 1.8.0,
then the Java release level is 8. If using Oracle Java 1.7.0,
the Java release level is 7.

    4) Save the changes you made to the tep.jnlpt file.
    5) Reconfigure the Tivoli Enterprise Portal client.

    For Windows:
    - Use the Manage Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Services panel
    - Right-click on the "Tivoli Enterprise Portal Browser" entry
    - Select the Reconfigure action

    For Linux/Unix:
    - Use the following command:
      <itm_install_dir>/bin/itmcmd config -A cw

    6) Clear the browser's cache using the browser's options dialog.
This step is needed to ensure that the updated *.jnlp file
generated from the previous reconfigure step will be retrieved
when the Java Web Start client is restarted.

    7) Restart the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Java Web Start client.
