embedded WebSphere Application Server fix pack install procedure for IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.2.2

Question & Answer

Question

How do we install a fix pack for the embedded WebSphere Application Server provided by IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.2.2?

Cause

IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM) provides embedded WebSphere Application Server (eWAS) for use with Tivoli Enterprise Portal Sever (TEPS). For maintenance purposes it may be necessary to install a fix pack for eWAS.

You can use this procedure to install fix packs for a given eWAS version, but not to upgrade to a new eWAS version. For example, you can use it to install eWAS 6.1.0.39 on top of eWAS 6.1.0.35, but you cannot use it to install eWAS version 7.0 on top of eWAS version 6.1.

The following table shows the different levels of eWAS that are provided by ITM 6.2.2:

ITM version
eWAS version
6.22.04.00 and later
6.1.0.35
6.22.00.00 through 6.22.03.00
6.1.0.23

This technote applies specifically to eWAS, not the full version of WebSphere. Further, this technote applies only to V6.2.2 of ITM.

Answer

Follow these steps to install a new eWAS fix pack into your ITM environment:

Step 1. Back up your ITM environment

    Back up your ITM environment using your local procedures.

Step 2. Download the eWAS fix pack files

    Step 2a: Determine the ITM platform for which the eWAS component is already installed.
    • Unix: Invoke CANDLEHOME/bin/cinfo -t iw and note the value returned in the PLAT column.
    • Windows: Invoke CANDLEHOME/InstallITM/kincinfo -t iw and note the value returned in the PLAT column.

    Find your ITM platform name in this table to determine the corresponding eWAS platform name:

      AIX R6.1 (32 bit)

      ls3266Linux S390 R2.6 (64 bit)LinuxS39064Linux/S390-64
      WICNSWindowsWinX32Windows/Intel-32
      Note: For some 64 bit platforms, ITM uses the 32 bit version of eWAS.

    Step 2b: Create a temporary directory to hold the fix packs.
    • Unix: Create a directory in /tmp or equivalent.
    • Windows: Create a directory in C:\TEMP or equivalent.

    Step 2c: Download the eWAS fix pack files to the temporary directory you created in step 2b. Each eWAS fix pack is comprised of two files:
      • 6.1.0-WS-WASEmbeded-platform-FP00000nn.pak contains eWAS itself.
      • 6.1.0-WS-WASSDK-platform-FP00000nn.pak contains the Java SDK that is used by eWAS. This Java SDK is separate and distinct from the one used directly by ITM.
    For both files, platform is the eWAS platform name and nn is the eWAS fix pack level. You must download both files for your platform.

    For some fix packs, additional interim fixes are available:

    • 6.1.0.31-WS-WASEmbeded-IFaparnum.pak or 6.1.0-WS-WASEmbeded-platform-IVaparnum.pak contain a patch for eWAS itself.
    • 6.1.0.0-WS-WASJavaSDK-platform-IFaparnum.pak contains a patch for the Java SDK that is used by eWAS.

    For both files, platform is the eWAS platform name and aparnum is the APAR number for the problem addressed by the patch.

    Refer the following page to download the eWAS fix pack files:

Step 3. Download and Install the IBM Update Installer for WebSphere
    The IBM Update Installer for WebSphere software is required for applying eWAS update packages. Download and install it from here:
    Choose your platform tab from the list and follow the instructions provided to install the IBM Update Installer for WebSphere in your environment. You must install the most current version (7.0.0.31 at the time of this writing).

Step 4. Stop the TEPS and the IBM Eclipse Help Server

    Use your local procedures to stop the TEPS (product cq) and the IBM Eclipse Help Server (product kf).

Step 5. Apply the eWAS and Java SDK fix packs Step 6. Copy Policy Files

    The Java SDK fix packs replace the policy files included in the ITM version of eWAS. The original ITM versions must be restored for the TEPS to work properly.
    • Unix: Run these commands:

      • cd CANDLEHOME/platform/iw/java/jre/lib/security
        find CANDLEHOME/JRE -name "*policy.jar" -exec cp {} . \;

      Where platform is the ITM platform value that you determined in Step 2a.
    • Windows: Run these commands:

      • cd CANDLEHOME\CNPSJ\java\jre\lib\security
        copy CANDLEHOME\InstallITM\*policy.jar
Step 7, Modify the ITM version information for the eWAS component

    ITM uses its own version control system to manage the application of fix pack maintenance. This must be updated to reflect the new eWAS level as defined on the downloads page.
    • Unix: Edit CANDLEHOME\registry\iwplatform.ver to change the VRMF value so it reflects the new eWAS level. For example, change this:

      • VRMF = 06103500

      To this:

        VRMF = 06104701

      Verify the change by running the command CANDLEHOME/bin/cinfo -t iw. Its output should reflect the new eWAS level.
    • Windows: Edit CANDLEHOME\InstallITM\ver\KIWWICNS.ver to change the VRMF and DVRMF values so they reflect the new eWAS level. For example, change this:

      • VRMF=06103500
        DVRMF=06.01.00.35.00

      To this:

        VRMF=06104701
        DVRMF=06.01.00.47.01

      Verify the change by running the command CANDLEHOME/InstallITM/kincinfo -t iw. Its output should reflect the new eWAS level.
Step 8. Start the TEPS

    Use your local procedures to start the TEPS. Starting the TEPS will automatically start the IBM Eclipse Help Server.

Step 9. Cleanup

    Step 9a: Remove the temporary directory and fix pack files that you downloaded in step 2.

    Step 9b: If you want to remove the IBM Update Installer for WebSphere refer to its uninstall documentation:

    After running the uninstall process, remove the directory where you installed the IBM Update Installer for WebSphere.
