Scalar data required for non-parametric tests involving median or rank

Problem

I am trying to do a nonparametric analysis with dependent variables that were Likert scales. The Measure attribute for for these variables was Ordinal. The Nonparametric Tests procedure (NPTESTS command) in Statistics 18 (or higher) returned a pop-up error dialog that stated: The Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-rank test can only be performed on two continuous fields Less than two continuous fields have been selected for testing." The procedure would not allow me to run the analysis unless I changed the Measure attribute for the dependent variables to Scale. These tests seem reasonable for Likert scales, which I consider ordinal, and I do not wish to mark such variables as scale variables. Is there a way to force NPTESTS to run such analyses with ordinal dependent variables?
