Error description

  • POP3 returns wrong number of available messages when they have
previously been downloaded using TOP command

When a POP3 client uses the TOP command to retrieve a message,
this message will not be available for download any more in
further session, until a new mail comes in the mail database or
    the
    POP3 task gets restarted.

    Steps to reproduce

    1-Build a standard Domino 8.0.2 FP2 with no specific Notes.ini
    parameter (also reproduced on 656 / 704 / 850 / 851)
2-Create a new user named POP, and restart the Domino server
3-Have your admin user send a mail to this new user POP
    4-Load the POP3 task
    5-Access the POP database using POP3 / Telnet :
     Telnet ServerIP 110
     User POP
     Pass Password
=>The server will respond "+OK pop has 1 messages"
6-Download the message using the TOP command :
     Top 1
    7-Stop the POP session :
     Quit
8-Log in the same database again
     Telnet ServerIP 110
     User POP
     Pass Password
=>The server will respond "+OK pop has 0 messages"
     Quit

As per the previous description, the Server has no POP3 specific
notes.ini parameter, so the mail should not be considered READ
(since it would require the parameter POP3MarkRead=1)
Therefore, the message should still be available. As a matter of
fact, using the Notes Client, the message appears unread.

9-Using your admin user / database, send a new mail to user
    POP
10-Log in the POP database again
     Telnet ServerIP 110
     User POP
     Pass Password
=>The server will respond "+OK pop has 2 messages"

The 2 messages are now both available.
We see that a new message coming in set the proper amount of
available messages back on track. The following steps show that
restarting the POP3 task also has the same effect

11-Download another message with the Top Command :
     Top1
    12-Stop the POP3 session
     Quit
13-Log into the same database again
     Telnet ServerIP 110
     User POP
     Pass Password
=>The server will respond "+OK pop has 1 messages"
     Quit

Despite the fact there are 2 available messages in the DB, POP3
    only shows 1

14-From the Domino Console, restart the POP3 task
15-Log into the same database again L
     Telnet ServerIP 110
     User POP
     Pass Password
=>The server will respond "+OK pop has 2 messages"
     Quit

    Other Info:
Might be related to SPR BMGN6YWRML but it is supposed to be
fixed in 8.5.1 while I could reproduce the problem on this
    version too.
Also, I did not use the JAVA mail API but a standard TELNET /
    POP3 session.

Local fix

  • The RETR command does not show such a problem : the amount of
    available messages is always correct
