Error description

  • This is an Enhancement request.
    Customer is requesting more information to be available in Help
    file regarding
    below values and the performance of Notes Client 8.5
      vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx256m
      vmarg.Xms=-Xms48m
    These parameters are located in the
    [notes_progdir]\framework\rcp\eclipse\plugins\com.ibm.rcp.j2se.w
    in32.x86
    _<...>\jvm.properties.
    Customer noticed that if the values are changed from
    vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx256m  to  vmarg.Xmx=-XmxXmx768m or even
    vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx1024m
    (N.B. half of the available RAM) the performance of the Notes
    increases
    dramatically.
    There is some info on the web but nothing officially from
    IBM:http://www.thenorth.com/apblog4.nsf/0/BB5DDB03611B2BB1852574

    << I've been reminded of this gem, given to me by skilled person
    I trust, which
    really speeds up the way Notes 8.x in Eclipse feels. I can't say
    if its
    actually faster, but it does feel much faster. I've heard some
    interesting
    stories about why this isn't set to a higher default, but since
    they're only
    stories I'm going to hold off repeating them.
    Use your file explorer to find this directory:
    {NotesProgramDirectory}\framework\rcp\eclipse\plugins\com.ibm.rc
    p.j2se.{Version
    }
    In this folder, look for the file "jvm.properties" One of the
    first lines that
    isn't commented out (preceeded by #) is:
     vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx256m
    Change that line to roughly half of your available ram. The
    recommendation I
    was given was actually 768, but since I have 3gb of RAM
    available to XP I set
    mine up a bit higher.
     vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx1024m
    Note: Make sure you close Notes before you do this, and that all
    the Notes
    processes are terminated. If you're not sure, reboot first.
    Go ahead, try it, and report what you think. >>

    <<Subject: don't forget jvm.properties trick
    As Bruce Elgort and others have posted: you can increase the
    speed of the
    eclipse environment by providing it with a bigger heap. Look for
    the
    jvm.properties in side the framework directory. The original
    lines are:
    vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx256m
    vmarg.Xms=-Xms48m
    max heap size and min heap size. Set max to at least 512, and
    min heap size too.
    Do not set them higher than available RAM! A not very corborated
    sweet spot
    seems to be 1024
