Planning Analytics and virus scan software

Question & Answer

Question

What TM1/Planning Analytics for Excel/Planning Analytics Workspace files/directories should virus scan software be set to avoid scanning?

Answer

TM1:
Virus scan software can negatively impact the performance of TM1 and can cause corruption if it scans TM1 files while TM1 is running. For that reason, virus scan software should be set to skip checking the following, or disabled on the server entirely:
  • The TM1 installation directory - by default at C:\Program Files\Cognos\TM1 (for versions prior to 10.1.0) or C:\Program Files\IBM\cognos\tm1_64 for newer versions.
  • The TM1 data directory
  • The TM1 logging directory (if not in the data directory) and any other logging directories noted in the tm1s.cfg (such as RawStoreDirectory)
  • The directory where the tm1s.cfg file is located (if not in the data directory)
  • The directory where any Excel sheets (or other docs) are located and uploaded to the TM1 server as a reference
  • The directory where any flat files may be written to (output from a TI process, for example) or pulled from (import into a TI process, for example)
  • Any other databases being used by a TM1 process (Oracle, SQL Server, MSAS, etc.)
  • The TM1Web/TM1WebEx files - by default located at: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ (for versions prior to 10.1.0) or within the TM1 installation directory for newer versions.
  • If using TM1Web, skip scanning the EXCEL.EXE file on the Web server - located by default (on a 64bit machine) at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12 (may be Office11 or Office14, depending on the version of Excel). On a 32bit machine it will be located at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

All sub-folders/files of the above mentioned directories should be skipped as well.

NOTE: If the TM1 files need to be scanned on occasion, first make sure that you do a SaveDataAll to commit everything to disk, stop all TM1 services and backup the TM1 data.

If the EXCEL.EXE files are not skipped, performance could suffer when slicing/snapshotting if the scan occurs while slicing. Setting the scan to occur after hours may be a viable alternative to skipping the file.
