IBM Support

Total data reduction ratio: 100.00%

Question & Answer

Question

A Tivoli Storage Manager client session ends and outputs a "Total data reduction ratio" statistic of 100.00%. What does it mean ?

Cause

Working as designed

Answer

Starting with the Tivoli Storage Manager V6.2 client, a new message is introduced in the statistics produced at the end of the backup operation. The "Total data reduction ratio" message adds incremental and compression effects. For example, if the bytes inspected are 100 MB and the bytes sent are 10 MB, the reduction would be: (1 - 10/100) * 100 = 90%.

Example of backup statistics :

Total number of objects inspected: 1
Total number of objects backed up: 0
Total number of objects updated: 0
Total number of objects rebound: 0
Total number of objects deleted: 0
Total number of objects expired: 0
Total number of objects failed: 0
Total number of bytes inspected: 569 KB
Total number of bytes transferred: 0 B
Data transfer time: 0.00 sec
Network data transfer rate: 0.00 KB/sec
Aggregate data transfer rate: 0.00 KB/sec
Objects compressed by: 0%
Total data reduction ratio: 100.00%
Elapsed processing time: 00:00:01

In above backup, 0B was transferred, so the Total data reduction ratio = " (1-0/569)*100=100%"
