Server fails to start with ANR9999D_1438116997 RdbStartInstance message

Troubleshooting

Problem

ANR9999D_1438116997 RdbStartInstance message received when starting the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Symptom

An ANR9999D_1438116997 RdbStartInstancemessage is seen when the Tivoli Storage Manager server starts up.

Cause

This is caused by DB2 not being able access the tsmdbmgr.env file

Diagnosing The Problem

The Windows Application event log will contain the following message.

"db2start : SQL5500N DB2 is unable to read the vendor configuration file ""c:\PROGRA~1\tivoli\tsm\server1\tsmdbmgr.env"".

The Tivoli Storage Manger server will report the following when it is started in the foreground.

ANR4726I The ICC support module has been loaded.
ANR0990I Server restart-recovery in progress.
ANR0151W Failure starting database manager.
ANR9999D_1438116997 RdbStartInstance(rdbinst.c:1057) Thread<0>: Add codes to msg DB_DATABASE_START_FAILED sqlCode -5500.

This DCF only relates to when the sqlcode -5500 is returned.

Resolving The Problem

Verify that the tsmdbmgr.env file is in the correct location and that the account being used by DB2 has access to the file.

If the file is not in the correct location, copy it to that location and start the server.

If the file does not exist, you can create a new text file in the server instance directory named tsmdbmgr.env. Copy and modify the following lines

DSMI_CONFIG=d:\tsmserver1\tsmdbmgr.opt
DSMI_LOG=d:\tsmserver1

The above paths should be modified to point to the location of your tsmdbmgr.opt and the server instance directory.
