Mounting a VOB reports error: mount.mvfs: File exists

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote explains how to resolve an error, mount.mvfs: File exists, that can occur when trying to mount an IBM Rational ClearCase VOB after having it previously mounted.

Symptom

After having a VOB mounted and trying to mount it again results in an error:

cleartool mount /vob/vobtag Mounting MVFS filesystem /vob/vobtag.
mount.mvfs: File exists

Another symptom of this problem is where unmounting a VOB and then running lsco results in:

cleartool lsco -cview -avobs cleartool: Error: Unable to determine view for "/vob/vobtag": not a ClearCase object.
