Error description

  • PROBLEM
    
    Customer reports when a Notes 851 Std Client tries to use an
    existing local desktop6.dsk file from older release to upgrade
    to desktop8.ndk, it instead crashes.  They loose ability to use
    their former desktop content as relaunch of Notes 851 after
    crash will assist in generating a smaller one instead to use
    for successful launch.
    
    
    Steps to Reproduce:
    
    - Using customer desktop6.ndk file
    - Add to local Notes 8x install
    - Launch Notes
    - Client launches and displays info that compacting desktop file
      over splash screen, then crashes
    - At os-level, note that desktop6 and new desktop8 ndk files
      are available and both show same file size
    - Relaunch Notes, this time a warning message is displayed
      ovr splash screen, indicating
    
    "Unable to load workspace file: desktop8.ndk".  The Notes
    database file header is corrupted.  Delete the file and create
    a new workspace?"
    
    - If repond 'yes' to this prompt and it opens Notes 85x with
    smaller desktop8 file and the ui shows only one workspace
    icon for bkmk file
    
    - All former desktop icon details are lost
    - Review of os shows that new desktop8.ndk file is very small
      now, around 512KB
    
    An spr was generated for further review of this concern.
    

Local fix

  • Workaround
    
    Can review removal of local desktop.ndk file if corrupted or
    unusable and relaunch Notes to create a new one.  This will
    however allow Notes to launch, but with a new, smaller desktop
    file instead that may probably not containing former icon data.
