Error description

  • NPM stops randomly but typically shortly after NPM SESSCOLL
commands are activated. The IEA995I symptom dump printed in
NPM's joblogs shows FNMSDC00 task suffers an abend0c7 at offset
    x' 4672 ' but this is really an abends0c7 in fnmsdc00's csect
    FNMSDC34 at offset x' 5E ' (PSW minus Reg12 minus ILC). CSECT
is at base code of NPM 2.3
This abend is immediately followed by another symptom dump
for an abend0c4 in task FNMONL00. Upon further analysis this
    is an abends0c4 in FNMONL00's FNMDSP00 csect at offset x' 560 '.
This abend is a consequence of the first. When the first abend
is resolved, this s0c4 in NPM's dispatcher routine will also be
    resolved.

NPM comes completely out of the system, with no need to force
or cancel NPM, yet if NPM is attempted to be restarted, NPM's
session collection routine, ISTEXPRF will abend upon startup:
       abends0e0 reason codes 2A or 28 or 29
with vtam message IST985I 'User Exit ISTEXPRF replacement failed
return code = F2 ' with RCF2 meaning 'an abend occured during
    processing within the exit ISTEXPRF'.
Because of the MSGIST985I message, NPM will refuse to continue
initialization, issuing MSGFNM305T 'FNMEXPRF not loaded, rc=24 '
This is due to some NPM CSA control blocks still remaining even
after NPM has completed its abend termination.

To allow NPM to restart, run FNMCLNPJ cleanup job (available
in SFNMJCL1). However, NPM is likely to suffer the abends0c7
again shortly, so another workaround may be to set HOSTCOLL=NO
on the NPM statement in FNMINIT, so that NPM can still collect
NCP, LAN, and VTAM statistics (but not session transit times or
    RTM data).

Local fix

  • Run FNMCLNPJ to clean up NPM's CSA storage which will allow
NPM to be restarted with HOSTCOLL=YES. However, if the abend0c7
recurs frequently, then an iterim workaround is to set HOSTCOLL
to NO on the NPM statement in FNMINIT, which will allow NPM to
run in a limited mode. It won't be able to collect session or
rtm data, but it will be able to collect NCP (NETCOLL), LAN
bridge and segment, and VTAM data.

If customer codes LUGRPNUM=xx (xx>0) so to enable the new
LUGROUP functionality and use the old LUGROUP type resources
(by inserting in the LU name some special characters like $,#
etc etc) FNMSDC34 is wrongly invoked and code abends S0C7.
This problem can be bypassed if LUGRPNUM=0 is coded.

Problem conclusion

  • Problem is dued because a piece of code is incorrectly
    invoked.
Additional code has been added to invoke module FNMSDC34
    in a proper way
