Error description

  • .
When the OSA detects an error with packet(s) being copied into
the buffers provided by the software, it will flag that buffer
with an 8F SLSB code. The current VTAM device driver will force
an INOP of the device when there are more than 2 of these in a
row. Messages issued for this case are:

EZZ4338I ERROR REPORTED ON INTERFACE xxxxxxxx - CODE 80100040
                DIAGNOSTIC CODE 03
IST1222I DATA DEVICE xxxx IS INOPERATIVE, NAME IS xxxxxxxx
IST1578I DEVICE INOP DETECTED FOR xxxxxxxx BY ISTLLCIE CODE
                 = 001
       IST314I END

The module and code in the IST1578I message is what
distinguishes this condition from other INOPs.

Local fix

  • .
If the DEVICE/LINK statements are used to define the OSA in the
TCPIP PROFILE, then adding the AUTORESTART keyword to the DEVICE
statement will allow it to automatically recover. If the
INTERFACE statement is used, automatic recovery is always
    performed.

If there is a high rate of these INOPs, check for problems in
the attached network or contact OSA hardware support.

    * Apply PTF.                                                   *
    ****************************************************************
OSA-Express QDIO interface is presenting VTAM with 3 or more
consecutive read errors. VTAM's channel end appendage routine,
module ISTLLCIE, treats the third consecutive read error as an
inoperative condition and takes recovery actions by INOPing the
device with an InopCode of 0001.

Problem conclusion

  • ISTLLCIE has been updated to tolerate a new threshold of 16
consecutive read errors from an OSA-Express interface. If the
OSA-Express interface exceeds this threshold VTAM will continue
to INOP the interface with InopCode 0001.
ISTLLCM8 - Included for maintenance purposes.
ISTTSEXT - Updated for internal use.
