Error 25588 when Connecting using shared memory connection

Problem

This document explains how to resolve error 25588 when attempting to connect to an IBM® Informix® Dynamic Server (IDS) instance using a shared memory connection.

Symptom

You are attempting to connect to an IBM® Informix® Dynamic Server (IDS) database instance using a shared memory connection, from an IBM Informix application or utilities such as dbaccess, onmode, oncheck, ontape, etc, and it returns connection error 25588.

For example, ontape -s -L 0 returns the following error :

could not fork server connection, SQLCODE -25588
Program over.

Note that in the same IBM® Informix® Dynamic Server (IDS) instance you may still be able to connect using a TCP connection.
