"Unable to cast COM object of type 'System._ComObject' ... No such interface supported" when trying to save an Excel spreadsheet that contains a chart

Troubleshooting

Problem

User creates a Controller Excel link spreadsheet which contains a chart. * User tries to run the spreadsheet (via F9) but receives an error * If the user tries to save it, they receive a similar error. The exact symptoms may vary, but in one real-life case the user sees the message (after running via F9). The user clicks 'Cancel'. The error message reappears. This repeats several times (e.g. three times). Finally, the data appears (seemingly correctly). Afterwards, when the user tries to save the XLS/XLSX file, the same error appears.

Symptom
