"An error occurred while trying to access server ... (0x800A01B0): File name or class name not found during Automation operation" when launching Controller client

Troubleshooting


Problem

User launches Controller client. User receives an error message.

Symptom

Depending on the version of Controller, you may see a different screen error message:

  • Controller 10.1.1:

    System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request. --->
    System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800A01B0): File name or class name not found during Automation operation
    at FrServerB.ServerIInfoClass.GetDBRelease(String sGuid, String sUser)
    at Cognos.Controller.Proxy.CCRWS.ServerInfo_GetDBRelease(String sGuid, String sUser)
    --- End of inner exception stack trace ---
  • Older versions of Controller (for example 8.x):


    • An error occurred while trying to access server
