Question & Answer
Question
After upgrading the Tivoli Storage Manager Storage Agent (STA) is a reboot of the host machine required?
Answer
If there is device driver installed on the system within the kernel, then a reboot will be required. Please consult the following list to determine if the device driver resides in kernel space:
Linux:
* Linux uses a pass-through driver, and a reboot is not required.
HP-UX:
* HP-UX using the pass-through driver, a reboot is not required.
* HP-UX using the DLKM (Dynamically Loadable Kernel Module) prior to TSM 5.4.3.0 and 5.5.1.0, a reboot is recommended, but not required.
* HP-UX using the DLKM (Dynamically Loadable Kernel Module) after/including TSM 5.4.3.0 and 5.5.1.0, a reboot is not needed. The following host/OS message may be seen:

Confirmation (c-218)
Before starting Installation, you should be aware of the following:
The kernel will be re-built on the local system.
Dynamic parts of the kernel will be changed on the local system. If a
Dynamically Loadable Kernel Module (DLKM) is busy, the system will be rebooted to complete the change.
Do you still wish to start Installation?

This message is a generic GUI message and is displayed as part of installation of the Storage Agent. The HP-UX host is not automatically rebooted hence a reboot of the host can be scheduled during a maintenance window.
AIX:
* A reboot is required but can be scheduled during a maintenance window.
Solaris:
* A reboot is required but can be scheduled during a maintenance window.
Windows:
* A reboot is required sometimes - plan on rebooting the host.
Notes:
1) Unix: If no devices are to be attached on the system, then the reboot can be scheduled during a maintenance window.
2) Unix: If the kernel module needs to reboot to pick up the new TSM device driver, then a system reboot is required.
