OPEN ACB fails with RETURN Code x'56'

Troubleshooting


Problem

Application issues OPEN macro to VTAM to open the ACB. VTAM fails the OPEN and returns x'56'.

Cause

The same application was active and open on more that one host. An LU on this host was in session with the same application on another host. This created a dynamic CDRSC in this host. When the application on this host issued the OPEN macroinstruction to open the ACB, the CDRSC was found and VTAM failed the OPEN and returned x'56' to the application. Only one instance of an application can be active in the same network.

Diagnosing The Problem

Issue the D NET,ID=application_name command to display the active CDRSC.
Issue a D NET,DIRECTRY,ID=application_name,SCOPE=NSEARCH command to display all instances of the application name that are found in the network.

Resolving The Problem

Inactivate all instances of the same application on other hosts before activating the application on this host.
