Error description

  • Running QUERY NODEDATA against a stgpool that has a very large
number of volumes can give the appearance of a looping server.
The issue involves internal lists that are built while scanning
for storage pool volumes to be checked for occupancy. As the
allocated list is exceeded it is expanded by a static amount and
all data is copied to the new list. Since the majority of this
processing is in memory, high cpu usage will be seen and it will
run virtually uninterrupted. Storage pools with a very large
number of volumes (10,000+) could run for 30 minutes or longer.

Local fix

  • Utilize additional parameters on the QUERY NODEDATA command to
reduce the list size, such as STGPOOL and VOLUME. Wildcards can
be used to select a subset of the volumes. Other queries that
scan storage pool volumes may also experience this behavior and
    should also incorporate limiting parameters.
