Troubleshooting


Problem

This technote explains why the error, tar: A lone zero block at ###", might occur while attempting to untar the IBM Rational ClearCase 7.0.1 downloaded installation files on Linux.

Symptom


Either of the following symptoms may be experienced:

  1. Attempts to untar the ClearCase 7.0.1 installation files to create a release area on Linux (C11ADML.zip) results in the following error:

    tar:  A lone zero block at ###" before failing.

    Note: A checksum of the tar file correctly matched the one on the download site.
  2. Errors like the following are reported during the installation and then with the site_prep when it starts to untar the JRE's.
    Site_prep errors

    ######################

    NOTE: Untarring JRE files.
         This step may take a while to complete.

    NOTE: Untarring some documentation files.
         This step may take a while to complete.

    tar: A lone zero block at 8285
    tar: A lone zero block at 357
    tar: A lone zero block at 13167
    tar: A lone zero block at 121
    tar: A lone zero block at 694

    Installation errors (the untarring appears to work ok through the installation)

             Untarring /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/man.tar

            Untarring /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/tutorial.tar
            Untarring /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/help/cc_cq_int_client.tar

    tar: A lone zero block at 8285
            Untarring /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/help/cc_mvfs.tar
    tar: A lone zero block at 357
            Untarring /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/help/cc_ref.tar
    tar: A lone zero block at 13167
            Untarring /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/help/ccint_cq.tar
    tar: A lone zero block at 121
            Untarring /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/help/ccint_cq_sum.tar
            Untarring /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/help/ccint_jbld.tar
