Problem

This technote explains why the error []multitool: Error: multitool: Error: Vob server operation "Protect Container" failed[] might occur when using IBM® Rational® ClearCase MultiSite® to export a sync packet on Microsoft® Windows®.

Symptom

multitool syncreplica -export -fship... reports the following error:

multitool: Error: multitool: Error: Vob server operation "Protect Container" failed.
          Additional information may be available in the vob_log on host "vobserver"
multitool: Error: multitool: Error: Unable to change permissions of "c\cdft\a\1c\80f258fc25e24f529e274233452e55f2": Permission denied.
multitool: Error: multitool: Error: Could not get statistics of the version data file for this operation.

The VOB server logs show the following errors:

vob_server.exe(1924): Error: Unable to chmod container D:\ClearCase_Storage\VOBs\store\vob.vbs\c\cdft\a\1c\80f258fc25e24f529e274233452e55f2: Permission denied
vob_server.exe(1924): Error: unable to get attribute for c\cdft\a\1c\80f258fc25e24f529e274233452e55f2: Access is denied.

Other symptoms:

  • It is not possible to read the file properties with Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer is reporting: Permission denied.
  • Attempts to delete the cleartext container yields the message Access Denied.
  • Running checkvob on this file yields the message Access Denied.
