Error description

  • The error described in PI86950 requires the fixing PTF to be
applied to all z/OS Communication Server TCP/IP stacks that use
the QDIO accelerator function (QDIOACCELERATOR parameter on the
IPCONFIG statement in the TCPIP profile) to forward packets to
an OSA-Express6S (available starting with z14). The addition of
a ++HOLD to describe this required action was not provided.
This APAR is solely for the purpose of providing the ++HOLD and
does not provide any new functional code.
    .
The error described in PI86950 is that the QDIO accelerator
function forwards packets without adjusting Ethernet frame
padding. If QDIO accelerator adds content to the Ethernet
payload that is then forwarded to an OSA-Express6S (available
starting with z14), the OSA-Express6S will detect a length
error and mark the read operation as invalid. Repeated read
errors may result in INOPs with IST1578I DEVICE INOP DETECTED
FOR xxxxxxxx BY ISTLLCIE CODE = 001. Potential discarded packets
    can impact performance.
    .
The most likely scenarios where content is added to the Ethernet
payload are GRE encapsulation due to VIPAROUTE or VLAN tagging.

Problem conclusion

  • The applicable PTFs for this APAR include the following
information in a ++HOLD for action.
The applicable PTF for this APAR must be applied to all z/OS
Communication Server TCP/IP stacks that use the QDIO accelerator
function (QDIOACCELERATOR parameter on the IPCONFIG statement in
the TCPIP profile) to forward packets to an OSA-Express6S
