Error description
An ABEND13E occurred for a connected user while the instruction at DSNVEUS1 +446 was being executed. The ABEND13E caused the CCB control block to be freed, but DSNVEUS1 was in the middle of manipulating it. This is a very rare timing window that has existed from the beginning when this code was written and its chance of occurring again are very rare. ************************************************************** Additional Symptoms and Keywords: ABEND04E AB04E S004E 04E 04E-00E2000E 00E2000E RC00E2000E DSN3AUCM.DSNSVSFB+08A2 DSN3AUCM DSNSVSFB +08A2 08A2 OFFSET08A2 ABEND0C4 AB0C4 S00C4 0C4 0C4-00000038 00000038 RC00000038 DSNSLD4.DSNSVSFB+03D4 DSNSLD4 DSNSVSFB +03D4 03D4 OFFSET03D4 Overlay overlaid SMCOVRLY DB2OVRLAY DB2OVRLAY/K

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All DB2 users. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Unpredictable symptoms including: * * o ABEND04E RC00E2000E * * DSN3AUCM.DSNSVSFB+08A2 * * o ABEND0C4 DSNSLD4.DSNSVSFB+03D4 * * o DDF Abnormal termination as * * indicated by message DSNL033I. * * The symptoms occur due to an overlay * * and DB2 must be recycled in order to * * correct the condition. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** In order to satisfy a user's SQL request, it was necessary for DB2 processing to spawn another (SRB related) thread. The user generated an abend 13E condition in order to interrupt the SQL processing, which is a common event, but happened to cause the abend 13E in DB2 while it was in a very small and sensitive window of the spawning process. The 13E abend interruption of the spawning process, during the short instruction window, ultimately leads to a one byte binary zero overlay of a "CCB" control block free chain. The nature of the one byte CCB free chain overlay leads to unpredictable symptoms. Known symptoms include: o Abend 04E-00E2000E DSN3AUCM.DSNSVSFB+08A2 o Abend 0C4-00000038 DSNSLD4 .DSNSVSFB+03D4 o DDF Abnormal termination as indicated by message DSNL033I. The overlay can impact all subsequent processing including local application work as well as work that originates from remote systems via DDF. The only solution for the overlay is to recycle DB2.
Problem conclusion
DB2 spawning processing has been changed to eliminate the short instruction window such that a 13E abend can no longer cause a damaged CCB free chain.
