Dumping or reformatting a VOB database fails

Troubleshooting


Problem

This technote explains how to resolve a vague error, db_dumper.54: Error: Error from libdb (1), that can be generated if the db_dumpers are not correctly owned or if they are not setuid when dumping or reformatting an IBM® Rational® ClearCase® VOB database on UNIX® or Linux®.

Symptom

An ambiguous error is generated when either reformatvob -dump or one of the dumpers is used to try to dump a VOB's database:

cleartool: Warning: Setting user-ID to: "joe_user"
Dumping database...                                            
db_dumper.54: Error: Error from libdb (1)
cleartool: Error: Could not dump database.
cleartool: Error: Trouble dumping versioned object base
"/vobs/test_vob.vbs"

In addition, the following error is also seen in the db_server log:


Error: unable to access directory /vobs/test_vob.vbs/db/..: A file or directory in the path name does not exist.

Note: With ClearCase 7.0, the above error is generated, but the preceding warning does not appear.
