sna start fails with message: failed to register as a path user

Troubleshooting


Problem

To enable Communications Server for Linux (CS Linux) on a Linux client or server, and start the SNA daemons (snadaemon, snaerrlog, and snacfgdae), you either (1) manually entered the sna start command at the Linux command prompt, or (2) started CS Linux automatically at system startup (the startup file /etc/rc.d/init.d/snastart includes the sna start command by default). The following error message was then displayed to your terminal's screen: [

  failed to register as a path user
]

Cause

The following are typical causes for the error:

  • User forgot to reboot after uninstalling the old Linux Streams (LiS) and before installing the new LiS
  • Level of LiS does not match that required by the level of CS Linux
  • LiS patch found in the /patches directory on the CS Linux installation media was not applied per README instructions
  • Responses to the LiS make prompts were not as required
  • Preparation steps on the kernel source were not completed.

Resolving The Problem

In all cases, check the appropriate CS Linux README file for LiS installation instructions.

If the first cause applies, fix this by rebooting now, or issuing the following commands:


    sna stop
    snaulmod
    rmmod streams
    sna start
