About ClearCase privileged users on Windows

Question & Answer

Question

Which users are privileged to be administrators when using IBM Rational ClearCase on Microsoft Windows?

Answer

ClearCase

ClearCase privileged user is a designation referring to a user account that is a member of the clearcase group, which is granted ClearCase administrator rights when working in Full ClearCase. Members of the clearcase group are granted special ClearCase rights.

Note: In Full ClearCase, user accounts that were members of the local Administrators group were previously granted ClearCase administrator rights. However, these users are no longer granted any special ClearCase access. This change was made because Windows users are often members of the local Administrators group, but they should not, by default, be granted ClearCase administrative rights.

ClearCase LT

ClearCase LT makes an exception to this rule of the clearcase group, by treating the local Administrators group as the ClearCase Administrators group on the ClearCase LT server only. There is no clearcase group created or required when using ClearCase LT. Also, a user who is a local Administrator on a client machine will not have ClearCase LT administrative rights.

To have ClearCase LT administrative privileges:

  1. the user account is a member of the ClearCase LT server's local Administrators group, and
  2. is physically logged in at the ClearCase LT server

Note: Some ClearCase utilities (like fix_prot) do not support working over a terminal emulator, such as Windows Terminal Server, so you need to be physically at the ClearCase LT server host and logged in to run these commands.

See technote 1143292 for more details on ClearCase permissions on Windows.

Creds

To determine what groups a logged in user account belongs to, and if it has ClearCase administrative rights, use the creds utility. This utility is located the C:\Program Files\Rational\ClearCase\etc\utils directory. See technote 1221403 for more details on this utility.
