Question
What does UNPE=Y mean? (Unresolved PE)
Answer
While ordering maintenance for an APAR and its associated PTF, UNPE=Y is on the PTF. There is no record in the PTF or associated APAR as to when or why this was set. It appears to be set incorrectly. Can this be reset? What is the meaning of UNPE=Y to the customer when they go to apply this maintenance?
UNPE= Y means that in order to install a PTF so marked, the user will also have to install a PTF that has an unresolved problem of some sort. The user must investigate and determine if the unresolved problem affects his environment and how serious the impact may be. The user makes an informed decision whether to proceed with ordering and installing the PTF or to wait for a fix.
Use PSPPT to investigate a PTF marked UNPE= Y:
- Enter N;PSPP (or enter it from a PMR in the usual way).
- Select the chain option from the main menus.
- Enter SUMMARY XXNNNNN, where XXNNNNN is the PTF marked UNPE=Y.
PSPP returns a listing of all unresolved PE APARs affecting the PTF, including the particular PTF they are written against. If the relationship between your PTF and any PE APAR is not clear, use PATH or detail commands (in that order of preference) to see the exact relationship. The UNPE= flag goes from N to Y and back to N as PE APARs are created and resolved. While the flag is UNPE= Y, use PSPP to see what PE or PE's affect the PTF. In addition, for MVS, VM, and VSE, PSPP automatically stops any order involving PTFs flagged UNPE= Y. The user can investigate and decide whether to proceed with the order, modify it, or cancel it.
Notes:
- The UNPE flag is a function of PSPP, not RETAIN, and is documented in the PSPP User's Guide, Chapter 6.
- When a PE APAR is created against a PTF, SSF notifies PSPP, which in turn marks the PTF UNPE=Y. In addition, PSPP puts the UNPE=Y into all PTFs listing the PTF as a REQUISITE (PRE-, CO-, or IF-REQ).
- When the PE APAR is fixed (A PTF for the same release as the original PTF is closed COR or PER), PSPP removes the UNPE=Y flags.
- Since UNPE can go back and forth frequently, no K-page entries are made. If entries are made, they would point to PSPP and not give much value. The UNPE flag cannot be edited.
