IBM Support

Using kill -9, prevents license server from being restarted

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote identifies a solution to not being able to restart the IBM® Rational® License Server after using the kill -9 command.

Cause

Using this method to stop the license server can leave behind a file that must be removed before the server can be restarted.

Resolving The Problem

Run the ps command to make sure that there are no more instances of the processes Rational and lmgrd running.

  1. If they are still running, first kill the lmgrd and then Rational processes

Note: If killed in the opposite order, the lmgrd may attempt to restart the Rational process.

  2. When there are no more such processes are running, proceed to delete the file: /var/tmp/lockrational.

If /var/tmp/lockrational cannot be found, then attempt to delete /usr/tmp/lockrational or /var/lockrational instead.

  3. Restart the license server.

Note: It is recommended to use lmdown to shut down the server, instead of using the kill command. lmdown closes out the Rational and lmgrd processes, as well as of removing the lockrational file.
