Creating UCM project results in "The name has illegal characters" error

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to create or rename an existing IBM Rational ClearCase UCM project results in the error "The name has illegal characters".

Symptom

As of ClearCase 2002.05.00 and later, creating a project with a space in the project name yields the error:

C:\>cleartool rename project:proj1@\pvob1 project:"proj1 one"@\pvob1

cleartool: Error: The name has illegal characters.

On Windows, the error from the graphical interface will display:

[{"Product":{"code":"SSSH27","label":"Rational ClearCase"},"Business Unit":{"code":"BU048","label":"IBM Software"},"Component":"UCM: Project","Platform":[{"code":"PF002","label":"AIX"},{"code":"PF010","label":"HP-UX"},{"code":"PF015","label":"IRIX"},{"code":"PF016","label":"Linux"},{"code":"PF027","label":"Solaris"},{"code":"PF033","label":"Windows"}],"Version":"7.0","Edition":"","Line of Business":{"code":"LOB77","label":"Automation Platform"}}]
