Setting up a Rational License Server (FLEXnet) on UNIX to serve Windows licenses

Question & Answer

Question

How can I set up an IBM Rational License Server (FLEXnet) on UNIX to serve licenses for IBM Rational products that are installed on a Microsoft Windows platform?

Answer

Follow these steps to perform the IBM Rational License Server installation.

  1. IBM Rational supplies the necessary installation files in tar format for several UNIX variants in the following location:

    www.ibm.com/software/passportadvantage

Look for 'Rational License Sever'. Ensure that the correct file is downloaded for the specific type of UNIX being used (for example: Solaris, HP, AIX, Linux).
  2. Refer to the license server versions from the following technote . 1411515: Rational License server versions and their corresponding Flexnet versions
  3. Each tar file is compressed using the standard UNIX file compress command. After downloading the file to the FLEXnet server, extract the compressed files as follows:
  4. Use the following command:
    For example:

uncompress <filename>.tar.Z or EXAMPLE:  gunzip <filename>.tar.Z
  5. Untar the file using the following tar command:
    For example:

    tar -xvf <filename>.tar

Each tar file contains several scripts. The following is a list of the more common scripts:
  6. lmgrdFLEXnet license server executable
ibmratlLicense vendor daemon executable for Rational SDP products - RSA,RAD,RSM etc.
    rationalRational's license vendor daemon executable
lmhostidCommand to display the host id
lmrereadCommand to reread the license file
lmstatCommand to check status of licenses for a server
    lmdiagDiagnostic command
lmdownCommand to bring down a license server daemon (lmgrd and rational)
exinstalCommand to validate rational license codes
  7. Download you license keys directly from the IBM Rational License Key Center

    www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/licensing
  8. Once you have downloaded your permanent license, save the file in a known location and run license_setup script from your install directory to import the license file. Note: The license_setup script prompts you to provide the location of the license file or gives you the option to enter the license key information manually.
  9. The license_setup script will import your license file and if successful it will create a <hostname>.dat file which will show the license key that was imported.

Note: To add additional license keys to existing license file, simply copy and paste the INCREMENT line into your license.dat file then restart the license server.
  10. Change directories with the cd command to the <Install Directory> and run the following commands:
    For example:

     /flexlm.<version>/sun4_solaris2

./lmgrd -c <Full Path to hostname.dat> to start the license sever.

./lmstat -c <Full Path to hostname.dat> to check the status of the licens
    e server.

  11. Go to the Windows client, open the License Key Administrator and select Settings > Service Configuration. Enter the host name of the UNIX license server and verify you are able to connect and view the licenses served.
Note: The UNIX host name will need to be able to be resolved by the Windows system if issues occur in the name resolution use the IP address of the UNIX system.
