IBM Support

WebSphere Application Server Community Edition v2.1.1.3 detailed system requirements

Release Notes

Abstract

IBM recognizes that customers might want to run WebSphere Community Edition on a broad set of configurations (for example: platforms, related products, or frameworks). To help customers understand the IBM support available for their planned configuration, IBM is introducing the “Recommended”, “Compatible” and “Not Supported” configuration classifications. These configuration classifications are intended to be used by customers who need to run on platforms that might not be tested with WebSphere Application Server Community Edition or who would like to use related products or frameworks that might have been tested by partners of IBM.

Platforms

In the following table, the Support Policy outlines how IBM intends to work with customers who have purchased IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition.

Type of configurationDescriptionSupport policy
Recommended configurationIBM recommends that customers use these operating system levels and processor architectures, since IBM tests WebSphere Application Server Community Edition with these platforms.IBM provides support for this configuration for customers who have an IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition support contract and are entitled to support, defect fixes or a reasonable alternative to address a reported problem with using WebSphere Application Server Community Edition on these platforms
Compatible configurationIBM makes no formal claim of how well these platforms will actually perform and therefore is not able to include them as Recommended Configurations at this point in time

Customers might want to run WebSphere Application Server Community Edition on a platform that they are more familiar with but is not on the Recommended Configuration category. IBM expects that WebSphere Application Server Community Edition should function reliably on a given platform if:
  • The application itself conforms to the J2EE™/Java EE™ specification, and

  • The platform has been validated by the Apache Geronimo community and is supported by IBM under an IBM Support for Apache Geronimo support contract, and/or

  • The platform has undergone a relatively minor level of testing by IBM to validate basic functionality (install, start the server, stop the server, and so on) on the platform, and/or

  • The IBM Business Partner (who owns, creates, maintains, publishes, sells, or delivers the platform) claims that WebSphere Application Server Community Edition works with their platform configuration
For customers that have an active IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition support contract, IBM will work with the customer, IBM Business Partners and the Apache Geronimo community in a commercially reasonable manner to help solve the customer problem or determine that the problem source is outside of WebSphere Application Server Community Edition.

Customers might be directed to our Business Partners for support on their specific offerings.

IBM might, at our discretion, defer support to a more current release of WebSphere Application Server Community Edition or choose to reclassify the configuration as "Not Supported"
Not supported configurationIBM is aware that these platforms have not been tested and are not supported with WebSphere Application Server Community EditionNot supported. Customers should use a Recommended or Compatible Configuration to receive support under an active IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition contract.

Related products and frameworks

In the following table, the Support Policy outlines how IBM intends to work with customers who have purchased IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition.

Type of configurationDescriptionSupport policy
Recommended configurationIBM recommends that customers consider using these related products or frameworks whenever it is feasible since IBM builds, tests and deploy the WebSphere Application Server Community Edition with these related products or frameworks.IBM provides support for this configuration for customers who have an IBM Support for WebSphere Application Server Community Edition support contract and are entitled to support, defect fixes or a reasonable alternative to address a reported problem with using WebSphere Application Server Community Edition with these related products or frameworks.
Compatible configurationIBM makes no formal claim of how well these related products or frameworks will actually perform and therefore is not able to include them as Recommended Configurations at this point in time.

Customers might want to use WebSphere Application Server Community Edition with many related products or frameworks to meet their business needs. IBM expects that WebSphere Application Server Community Edition will function reliably with a related product or framework if:
  • The application itself conforms to the J2EE™/Java EE™ specification, and

  • The related product or framework conforms to the J2EE™/Java EE™ specification, and

  • The related product or framework has been validated by the Apache Geronimo community and is supported by IBM under an IBM Support for Apache Geronimo support contract, and/or

  • The related product or framework has undergone a relatively minor level of testing by IBM to validate basic functionality (install, start the server, stop the server, etc.) with the related product or framework, and/or

  • The IBM Business Partner (who owns, creates, maintains, publishes, sells, or delivers the related product or framework) claims that WebSphere Application Server Community Edition works with their product or framework

System requirements

This section provides information about the various requirements. It is divided into several sub sections as follows.

On some platforms WebSphere Application Server Community Edition is supported only for development and testing. In the below sub sections, some of the platform names are super-scripted with a number. For each super-scripted number, there is a corresponding note in Notes sub section at the bottom. Follow the note to understand how IBM treats each such platform. The Notes sub section also has additional information on supported platforms.

Memory requirements

Disk: 150 MB to hold the server's installation files, initial configuration, and log files (not including JDK)

Memory: 256 MB RAM (512 MB or more preferred and depends on deployed applications)

Notes

  1. Supported for application design, development, and testing; no support for production use.

  2. WebSphere Application Server Community Edition, running under a recommended IBM SDK on a recommended operating system cannot distinguish between x86_32 and x86_64 architecture. WebSphere Application Server Community Edition does not impose additional hardware restrictions beyond those imposed by the IBM SDK or operating system.

  3. We recommend running WebSphere Application Server Community Edition under the default shell for this OS (/bin/sh).

  4. Supported for application design, development, and testing; used by the server at runtime; no support for production use with customer applications.

  5. System z support is only available as part of the Open Source Consolidation Package.

  6. Java SDK is required when using the Eclipse plug-in or using Java debug options.

  7. Locked-down security policies may not work correctly.

  8. v2.2.24 is included in Novell SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.
