Error description

  • When a crash occurs in the parent process, the
    CoreDumpDirectory is ineffective, causing core files
    to be written to unexpected (often /) directories.

    Note that parent process crashes are much rarer than child
    process crashes. This APAR does not affect child process
    crashes.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users experiencing parent process crashes. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Core files for parent process crashes *
    * may be written to / instead of the directory specified by *
    * CoreDumpDirectory.                                           *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply this fix if the root-owned parent *
    * process is crashing.                                         *
    ****************************************************************
    When IHS receives a fatal signal, a signal handler is invoked
    that changes the working directory of the process so corefiles
    will be written by the OS to the desired directory.

    When this code was running in the parent, a defect in the
    signal handler would cause a crash. This crash was also before
    the working directory was changed.

Problem conclusion

  • The data structures are now initialized in the parent process
    in the same way the child process does, preventing the
    crash in the signal handler

    This fix is targeted for:
    Fix pack 6.0.2.35
    Fix pack 6.1.0.23
